Hunchback of Notre Dame Silent Film Presentation at St. John’s Church, Washington and Willow Streets, Newport
Opening with a comedy short starring Buster Keaton, this unique concert moves on to the feature-length original 1923 silent film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, with live organ accompaniment improvised by the spectacular silent film artist Peter Krasinski of Boston. Krasinski, past Dean of the Boston chapter of The American Guild of Organists, is known internationally for his silent film accompaniments, and delighted Newport in 2017 with his playing of this film at St. John’s. We’re repeating it, given the immense outpouring of support and interest in Notre Dame cathedral following its roof fire in April 2019. As part of the film’s “soundtrack,” the Professional Choristers will sing pieces written by past musicians at Notre Dame inserted at appropriate scenes, and the church’s tower bells will be rung to dramatic effect. A Newport Winter Festival event. $10/$5 with Winter Festival bracelet. Proceeds benefit Hook & Hastings Organ Restoration.

Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., St. John’s Guild Hall: Choir School Piano Student Recital

Six students in our Piano lesson program along with two other students of our piano teacher Kelly House presented a showcase of recent work since our piano lesson program began last October. Eight Yamaha electric pianos going at once on the floor was a lot of fun, along with solo performances on the real Steinway “M” piano on the stage in the Guild Hall. A Reception followed.

Mark McKenna, an advisor to our Piano Program Outreach Committee, who works at Pell Elementary School, noted:

“I have spoken to the students about their experiences on an ongoing basis and also several of the parents. All give positive feedback. I will note that the students often give these short answers, like “-it is fun” or “I like it”. When I start to ask for some more in depth feedback, one of the students shared with me that they are excited about about having more friends, they are definitely widening their circle of friends/social contacts. One also shared that they are more confident. Being in front of an audience has helped boost their overall confidence level. They feel empowered, braver. I think that they are really engaged in an activity that gets them out into the bigger world and exposes them to a part of our community that they would not normally engage with. This has really helped integrate them into our community at large. It really expands their world and the possibilities that are available to them. This is no small thing-they are learning that there are things they can do, that they may never have dreamed they could. They know they can perform a song-make real music, on an instrument. This is big step forward for them. If you asked them if they thought they would be performing for an audience 6 months ago they may have given you a puzzled look, but now they know they can do it.”

Our piano teacher added: “I was very pleased on Saturday. I didn’t know if they would feel confident sharing their playing. I think their confidence, poise, and pride also shows the work that they have done in choir. The combination of choir and piano training seems to be paying off in multiple ways.”

Saturday, June 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  THE HYMNATHON   England tour FUNdraiser event

The goal: Sing one verse of every hymn in the Episcopal Hymnal 1982, 720 hymns in all, in order, concluding with the National Anthem! Choir members come and go throughout the day as their schedules and staminas allow. A rotation of three organists enables playing without collapse, as well as multi-handed accompaniments. Bells may be rung to buy an extra verse; a gong may be rung to cancel a hymn entirely. Bell and gong prices may vary widely throughout the day, depending on keeping to 72 hymns per hour, and the whim of the emcee. Certain singers may be sponsored with an amount for every hymn sung. Certain hymns may be sponsored, generating a donation based on how many are singing that hymn when it occurs. Singers can be sponsored with a simple flat rate donation. And it’s also possible to affect the outcome globally, with an amount for each hymn-unit sung by anyone. A fun day as only a marathon can be, with a canteen in the Guild Hall, and freedom to come and go as you please.

Choral Evensong & Benediction in Honor of Absalom Jones for Black History Month

Blessed Absalom Jones was born a slave in 1746 and bought his own freedom in 1784. He was the first African-American ordained a priest of the Episcopal Church in 1802 and was a tireless opponent of slavery and minister to the Black community until his death in 1818. We are celebrating his witness to holiness with a special Evensong and reception sponsored by the Center for Reconciliation, an initiative of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island that “fosters interracial reconciliation through programs that educate, inspire and engage.” The service will be followed by a reception in the Guild Hall with a Q&A on interracial reconciliation efforts in Newport and beyond. In addition to traditional music for Lent, the service begins musically with “I have a Dream” by local composer Carolyn S. Hall (written in response to the MLK, Jr. assassination in 1968) and the congregational hymn “Lift every voice and sing.” Later in the service we hear Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere. With its rare high ‘C’, the Miserere was considered the unique property of the Sistine Chapel and the penalty for copying it was excommunication… until the young Mozart transcribed it and was pardoned by the Pope.

February 14 – Solemn Ash Wednesday Service at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church at 6:30 p.m. The Imposition of Ashes will be accompanied by Allegri’s Miserere, performed by the Professional Choristers of the Choir School of Newport County and the St. John’s Adult Choir. With its rare high ‘C’, the Miserere was considered the unique property of the Sistine Chapel and the penalty for copying it was excommunication…until the young Mozart transcribed it and was pardoned by the Pope! Also with music by Byrd and Farrant.

The Preacher and Celebrant at this service will be The Right Reverend Nicholas Knisely, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island.

Tuesday, February 13, 2018 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Mardi Gras Dessert Tasting, Choir Cabaret, and Silent Auction

hosted by Seamen’s Church Institute and held at Seamen’s Church Institute, 18 Market Square, Newport.

This event benefits The Choir School’s educational Tour to England, August 1-15, 2018. Admission is $20 per person and a dessert to share. Beverages are provided. Mardi Gras attire encouraged!

The St. John’s Adult Choir and Professional Choristers turn on the charm in a secular British Eve-of-Valentine’s Day-themed entertainment including excerpts from Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas; Edward Elgar’s Salut d’Amour arranged for choir; drawing-room ballads by Ivor Novello, and a highly caloric send-up of Handel’s Hallelujah chorus. Come combine your love of dessert and romance with a great cause and splendid spaces.

Three unique and intimate spaces at Seamen’s Church Institute make this a very special evening: The main hall (for the auction and desserts), the Library (for the musical performances) and the exquisite tiny Chapel (for a display of tour-related items). The Chapel shares something with St. John’s: both it and St. John’s side chapel were given by Mrs. Sidney Webster and decorated by Durr Freedly of the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, NYC.

Tickets are on sale at the door. Attendance is limited to 80 persons.

Krasinski, past Dean of the Boston chapter of The American Guild of Organists, is known internationally for his silent film accompaniments, and delighted Newport in 2015 with his playing of The Phantom of the Opera at St. John’s.  The Professional Choristers of The Choir School of Newport County will sing as part of the film “soundtrack” in pieces written by past musicians at Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, inserted at appropriate times in the film. On Wednesday, June 21st, 2017 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, in the Guild Hall of the Church of Saint John the Evangelist, 61 Poplar Street, Newport, the Newport Opera House Theater & Performing Arts Center and the Professional Choristers of The Choir School of Newport County will host a performance featuring singers Joseph and Thomas Burdick, as part of their participation in the inaugural year of Make Music Rhode Island, an international outdoor celebration of music. This performance will include a reception, during which audience members can meet the performers and enjoy refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.
Joseph and Thomas Burdick are returning for an encore performance after their successful performance during the Opera House Theater’s May 5th “Theater Happening in Washington Square!” event. The Opera House Theater, one of the oldest Opera Houses in the country, is actively engaged in restoring and renovating the historic 1867 Opera House Theater in downtown Newport into a 700 seat venue for year-round programming of live performances that will serve as a cultural asset, economic driver, and educational catalyst locally and in the region.
“The audience fell in love with them,” said Opera House Theater Executive Director Brenda Nienhouse. “Joseph and Thomas are extraordinarily talented. Everyone wanted to see more. We are delighted to have them for this event!”
The Professional Choristers of The Choir School of Newport County, of which the Joseph and Thomas Burdick are regular singers and teen mentors, will be joining the Burdicks for this June 21st performance. They will reprise several pieces from their recent Spring Concert, including Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, Paul Halley’s cosmic Untraveled Worlds, and Halley’s jazz-inspired Freedom Trilogy.
This event marks Rhode Island’s inaugural year in the international Make Music festival, now the 39th state to take part in this international celebration. Make Music started over 34 years ago in France as a musical celebration held on the summer solstice where all walks of musician-professional and amateur, young and old, and every musical persuasion-poured into public squares, streets, plazas, and porches and share their music with the world. “Fete De La Musique” (French for both “festival of music” and “make music!”) has since spread around the world, with over 750 cities worldwide participating last year.
The Newport Opera House Theater & Performing Arts Center and The Choir School of Newport County are thrilled to bring this tradition to the vibrant performing arts scene in Newport, R.I. We hope you can join us!
Wednesday, June 7, 2017    Take Me Out to the Ball Game
Twenty Professional Choristers from the Choir School, from St. John’s and St. Mary’s Churches, combined to sing the National Anthem on opening night at Cardines Field and had a fantastic time. Teams of choristers in red and blue robes then sold 50/50 raffle tickets to the crowd, and we raised $230 for our joint educational activities. At the seventh inning stretch we all led ‘Take me out to the ball game.’ A new singer out in the stands was moved to join the choir and his mother set up an audition on the spot; and Mayor Harry Winthrop, after hearing us sing, invited our participation in the opening ceremonies of the Black Ships Festival next month (celebrating our partnership with our sister city of Shimoda, Japan).
